Default Turbo 'Hiss'

Evening all,

I'm here again to pick your brains. My question this time relates to the turbo on my 2004 53 plate D5 SE. Is it normal to hear a 'hiss' from the turbo when easing off the accelerator after acceleration? Quite faint but definitely there. The engine has also started to sound 'raspy' under acceleration, and MPG has dropped along with a slight loss in power.

Should I be worried? Any suggestions as to what the cause may be?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

Had a bit of a look around at the pipes from the air box to the turbo and found a 'loose' connector between two pipes (circled in red on picture below)

I can twist the connector (when taking hold of the pipe) from side to side and there is a little up and downwards play too.

Is this normal? What is the connector? (Has an electrical connection to it)

Sorry about the picture but posting in work so do not have the best software / system to work with

Once again, thanks in advance

The pipes from the airbox to the turbo aren't under pressure so I doubt a leak here would be loud enough to produce the hiss you describe. The pipes after the turbo, to the inlet manifold are under pressure and are far more likely to be the source of the hiss.

However, I think the part your refering to is called a "nipple"(part number:8653644) in VIDA and is where the engine breather connects to the intake.

Any change in colour of exhaust gasses? I get a slight hiss from the turbo generally but I'm just thinking the hiss could be a blown intercooler (air escaping from the intercooler) in which case you would normally see black smoke on hard acceleration. When it goes you do get less power and less MPG. I've the same age car and the intercooler is a common issue. It tends to go at the top of the intercooler in the midpoint between the inlet and outlet. If it’s gone you will see it’s bowed up at this point and there will be oily residue around that point. Other than this, it’s a case of check pipe work as you are doing looking holes unless someone knows anything more likely.

Haven't noticed any change in smoke (either colour or amount produced). I have been told that it is sucking in air through the filter box lid, which has a broken lug and so does not seal properly due to being 'bowed' inwards in the middle.

Had to order a full box from the main dealers, £160, as couldn't source one from a breakers.

Had a read of this thread:

and got me wondering just how soft is too soft, and how hard should the pipe be?
