Default S40 1.6D no power / whining noise

Hi all,

Accelerating up a hill the other day I heard what sounded like a reasonably quiet 'pop' from the engine bay and lost pretty much all power.. crawled up the hill and thankfully managed to drag it the 5 miles along the flat to home. What was now present was a loud 'whine' that rises and falls with the revs.

Found the pipe between the air filter and the turbo had a split in it, so replaced that today but it hasn't solved anything.

There are no warning lights on, and no codes being shown on my el cheapo OBDII scanner. Starts and idles fine. Seems to pull ok downhill, albeit with the noise.. but still crawls up hill.

Struggling to pinpoint the noise exactly but after much Googling it sounds like the turbo may be on the way out?

Any ideas?

Cheers
Phil
