Interesting that it feels small! It's probably (among other factors) the size of the windows? The other estate we had been looking at was the BMW 5 Series, which is lovely, but it too felt small compared to the V70 and we think it's because 1) the windows are slightly smaller and higher up, and 2) the black leather is VERY black. We think both of these contributed to a sense of darkness and cramped space, hence the V70 won. Plus the horizontal space you get from the V70 with the seats down is incredible.

Update:

OK so this morning I spoke to a Volvo-Reading mechanic, awesome conversation, he was very aware of various gearbox issues and seemed very capable, in that he's had previous experience in fixing them: ~£550 for a service, and if the issue persists, ~£1380 to remove the box and replace worn seals (inc VAT)

The gearbox was still thumping into D, even when I showed it to the second hand car dealership BUT when we popped over to his gearbox "specialist" with an epic mustache, the thumping stopped! No amount of D-N-R-N-D-etc would replicate the thumping, so either his mustache is lucky, or something "dislodged" it self.

We drove an extra ~50miles after that, and yup, no thumping! Lets hope this persists. Either way, I'll get the gearbox serviced, and hopefully that'll be the end of this little saga.

I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure it's flush, adaptations, etc

Please do it.

Price in CH for Volvo XC90 is 550 CHF - 450 pounds in Volvo (my friend did it) or for Jaguar XF V8 ZF6 also flush 500€ in Germany by gearbox specialist

Update:

Popped over to my parents on Friday, so a good mix of motorway and town driving, and the autobox was fine. No thumping into D, gear changes were smooth, what and odd situation! I'm starting to wonder if the computer did indeed "adapt" to my "unique" way of driving, which I don't think is that eccentric

Any adaptation of the "D" to "R" sequence would only take place during that aspect of driving the gearbox. Cruising on motorways or thrashing around country roads would have no effect on the stationary to forward or backward movement. It is possible that the box did carry out its own adaptations when you moved the car backwards and forwards and that it just took time for it to take up the software sequencing. Let's hope that it now continues to behave itself and that the problem is over. There isn't much that you can do now as it is not exhibiting the symptoms any more. Let's hope it stays that way!

Fingers crossed! Either way I'll get it serviced mid-June, and that should be it in terms of looking after it.

It is fixable if you have a DICE and VIDA. You need to run the adaptation feature (under Fault Tracing'). Bit of a faf, but it works very smoothly now.

Sounds to me that some mechanics at the dealership have no idea what they should be doing... With the eye watering hourly rate they are charging, it is pretty 'poor', to say it kindly...
I see there is a "resetting adaptation" (for replacing gearbox or parts of it) and "control module adaptation".

Which one did you use?

My T6 can be a bit jerky at times. I have changed the oil and reset the oil counter previously.

Cheers
