...looks like a single central float and fuel bowl from the pictures...I don't see any reason to have separates...

Agreed it looks like a central float bowl but what happens under had acceleration? Does the rear half flood and the front half starve?

Size mainly, the option to get twin carb performance in a tight space. If you look at the pics, one of them has suggestions of engines they may fit including the Coventry Climax (think HIllman Imp) where space is at a premium and other carbs wouldn't necessarily fit.
On something like a B18/20, the possibility no doubt exists to fit a pair of these, giving one choke per cylinder operation.

Quite likely, it's hard enough setting up a pair of normal twin carbs at times with their own separate float chambers but i suspect these would be even harder to set up. Probably get better results overall once set up correctly but would it be worth the extra grief to get there?

Did quite a bit of investigation of this setup recently and found that as constructed the carbs were only used for racing. One issue with them is as constructed they do not idle properly, but for racing that is not a problem.

I am a real fan of the SU and they have to be one of the best carbs going. As nice as this version is I do not see them being practical for road use.
What would be a interesting carb to play with is the Fish, I have never seen one but they should be a great carb and not sure why they did not take off https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reece_Fish_Carburettor or much more detail http://minnowfishcarbs.co.uk/full-history |

Vacuum Gauge:~
I don’t have a Volvo with SU carburetors but I do have them on a Riley: ~ The attached had been on that forum regarding adjustments & faults—thought that it may be of interest to others.
