Early'ish euro3 v euro4 : But which one ?
Hi guys (& gals).
I'm starting to look around for an XC90 diesel. I've been driving 4x4's for nearly 20 years and know they go wrong and need work and being a very competent diy mechanic I like cars that I can fix when I have to without too many sensors to put lights on the dash and drop into limp mode. I am undecided which to go for though so seeking your recommendations. Fortunately the budget is up to 5k but if I can get away with spending 1k then great. I'm not too precious about mint condition as I know how annoyed you can get when you notice a new supermarket dent or maybe a crushed packet of crisps stuck down the back seats from my little one. I like the 185bhp power of a euro4 engine but there again dont like the extra sensors so am considering a euro3 but at 163bhp. I assume if I needed to I could get this chipped to at least the euro4 level. Am I right in thinking the euro3 doesnt have dpf? IF I wanted to (I know it is wrong!) that I could also block the EGR? I have also read the 4wd Haldex could be troublesome where it wears out due to road dirt on the earlier models and it's a full days work on the drive to repair it. Did that problem go away after 2007? I should have added that my first and only Volvo was a petrol 1992 940 which was comfy but useless pulling a caravan off a muddy camp site Is there a guide to the enhancements of the euro4 over the euro3? Maybe the final question did they do the dark grey colour on the early models? Lots of questions I know but the more I extract from your knowledge the better I will be informed.

Euro 3 ( black engine cover ) 163 bhp and no DPF .
Lovely engine BUT it comes with a weaker angle gear spline in any case and weaker 5 speed Geartronic box if going Auto . Euro 4 ( grey engine cover ) DPF plus Swirl flaps BUT much better auto gearbox and revised angle gear spline. If only you could mix and match My 2007 E4 Geartronic has been fine so far 3 years in. If you are a bompetent mechanic get a laptop/Vida set up as you will almost certainly need it and will save you a fortune in dealer visits. cheshired5 a member on here sells complete vida set ups and has a very good reputation . Ask away for anything else
