Lads,
A big thankyou for he write ups. Essential reading for anyone who has that issue. I had a similar fault, and naturally the machanic was saying a new turbo was in order at the princely sum of £500. So after getting a couple of hours off and reading the post here, I went through all the checks and suspected the waste gate solonoid. I removed same, and tested it. It was makeing some funny noises when I blew into it (akin to farting in both directions when it only one should happen in one direction), so of to the scrap yardfor a new one for a fiver. It came out of a VW so changed the wiring, and now car like new! £500 to £5! Unreal. Many thanks

Did this tonight and cleaned the EGR valve too. Made a slight bit of difference I think but I reckon my mounts are goosed. Fabricated a patch wire from a VW windscreen washer bottle power connector etc as per the other post.

To get around shorting out against the starter motor I pulled the relevant fuses as well as putting a rag over the motor.

The VW (Piersburg?) unit works fine and seems far better made than the existing one on the vehicle.

So all in all, a good result.

Certainly a job on my to do list.

Incidentally, does anyone know what boost the 163PS D5 is supposed to run at ?
I recently bought an OBD II bluetooth adapter linked to the Android torque app.
It says my car is running 1.6 bar at less than 2,500rpm. Sounds a bit high to me, I thought turbos usually ran in the 0.8 to 1.0 bar range.

Wouldn't pulling the battery leads after the minimum 10 minutes do the job ?
Use a rag over the starter to catch any bolts making a bid for freedom, but no juice = no risk would be the way to go Shirley !

+1 on the whistle & Psst when cold.
Goes away as soon as warmed up.

Haven't cleaned anything yet & no noticeable performance issues.
