dont be put of taking the trailer over ie stena line belfast to stranrare was only £55 and the trailer we took was nearly as big as the car we took our horse box you will see it below
not sure how much norfolk line would want if your using them but for extra little cash and trailer over prob be better on the car

thanks Craig , Norfolkline want more extra for the car on tow than the towing car £105 extra quoted , so Stenna Stranraer looks the better option its just the 200miles extra driving but thats offset by the shorter 2 hour crossing compared to 8 hours on the Liverpool ferry which after about four hours gets very boring and I dont rate the free lunch on the Birkenhead ferry at all , they make you que up for an hour then as soon as you sit down to eat they make an anouncement that the restaraunt is closing in 5 minutes , they do this every time . probably going for a towing dolly as advised by Dave unless I can find a full size braked car trailer for a good price , the towing dollys seem to go for about £300 on ebay .
