Many Interesting points raised here, but personally I'd avoid 2nd hand tyres. My reasons (at least) are two-fold...

1) Tyre damage may not be obvious. I once had to return a brand new Michelin as it caused the car to pull to one side, attributed to bad storage while in transit. There was no visible damage whatsover and it was replaced under warranty, but I often wondered whether it would end up being sold on to some unsuspecting punter?

2) No matter how well-intentioned they may be, tyre fitting centres tend not to employ (or offer wages for) the most skilled of mechanics. I therefor would reserve judgement even if they reassured me that the tyre had been 'thoroughly inspected'.

Per buying used cars, that's a good point. Until not many years ago I'd always buy new cars, so was not an issue. As I plotted my escape from employment however I have started buying used cars. No, I don't immediately replace the tyres. But like many aspects of a used cars, the tyres are a niggling worry. And I do breathe a small sigh of relief when they wear out and I get to replace them with (new) items of my choosing.

I used to sell part worns in the late 90s, bought from a tyre dealer who collected the scrap tyres from tyre companies such as kwik fit,ats etc, we always inflated to 40psi overnight and checked them in morning after, 4 out of 10 had defects, bulges, punctures in edges(should not be repaired) or other unseen damage when off the rim.
you would be better going to a breakers yard and finding a tyre inflated on a rim and changing on to your wheel. that is unless you know how to inspect a loose tyre properly for faults. There was a scheme where reputable part worn dealers would put a green oval patch on the tyre saying tested used tyre, this was to try and get rid of the shady dealers who would sell you any old rubbish.
I still use part worns but i know how to check tyres, but not on my V40 which is used for fast travel.

so some one with a nice car wants to buy new wheels that will need tyres also

garage buys them , sells complete or tyres only etc

there is a huge market for excellent tyres S/H

magazines, need to protect themselves . They dont want to upset their advertisers

I must admit I have used part worn tyres. The dealer I used was importing them from countries that required deeper thread depths to be legal than here, I cant remember where exactly but germany comes to mind. they were paint marked "part worn" and he quite frankly told me they worked out more expensive than new tyres. However I still worried about the tyres past and the safety of the tyres. when I could afford to I replaced them with new tyres but at the time they allowed me to get my car through an mot and keep it on the road so I could get to work.

Depends very much on where you buy them from, there are a lot tyre sellers who don't have any tyre fitting qualifications of experinace, will not check the tyres, don't have decent well maintaned fitting kit, won't stamp them and won't even balance the wheels let alone torgue the wheel nuts correctly. although this can also be true of some so called specialist
Buying used tyres can be a false saving, tyres under 3 mm are upto 80% less effective than new ones and the last couple of mm will wear quickly.

Fitting used/ part worn tyres will not in itself invalidate your insurance but having the wrong spec or damaged tyres could.

And I recently paid £92 a tyre for new Michelin for my V70, they had 8mm of tread new, you are haveing a bargain. I see no problem in part worn and have used them in the past, even fitted them to an escort rally car when money was tight, would always give them a blast by myself before putting the family in the car just to satisfy myself they were ok.
Many dealer second hand deals, Volvo selekt etc, stipulate a minimum of 3.6mm tread on tyres so there is a lot of tyres with good life in them goin begging somewhere.
