what breaks these is the plastic stop buttons breaking and falling out , and overloading the ball joints there are 4 , 2 on each hinge .

hiya clan, thanks for the reply.
it's actually the strut it's self thats broken, one of the two loops because i pulled the boot up in a hurry when i got angry and had forgotten to get stuff out of the boot to change my drop links and then i found i'd forgotten to put some tools in the boot i'd needed to do it- how annoying! lol

anyway if anybody has one knocking about then it'll save me going to volvo to find some obscene price!

Yes the struts break beacuse the stops are missing and the boot travel increases letting the strut ball joints take the full force of the boot lid . Bet your stops are missing :-)

They are black discs about 10mm diameter and protrude about 3 mm , when the boot is fully open the hinge rests on themand hence limits the travel .

They sell the full gas strut at Nordic Parts for your car. Look on the body section:

http://nordicpartsdirect.co.uk/volvo/

Price of ~£27 + vat is not as major a robbery as I might have expected.

Hi Clan, are the discs made from plastic? I purchased some before and the hinge ended up breaking them as soon as I opened the boot! Do you have a photo of the discs you could post?

yes they are 4 black plastic buttons which press in and the hinge rests on them at the fully open position . I have no photo .
I would think the damping in your gas springs has gone if the boot shoots up and breaks the stop buttons ..
