OK dedicated some time to looking at this this morning.
Used Vida to check the current through the solenoids all look OK but also buzzed them out from the TCM connector to be sure and all good. Removed the two speed sensors to check for damage the rear one had very badly oxidised contacts but made no difference. Monitored the speed outputs on Vida and both seemed to correlate. Discovered a TCM test mode in Vida which displays which gear is selected and also the status of the lock-up function solid yellow triangle for locked and flashing for slip mode. Took it for a test drive and basically if I drive like a granny the transmission works perfectly with the solid yellow triangle coming on in the higher gears indicating torque converter locked However if I prod the accelerator the triangle immediately changes to flashing indicating slip mode and I can see the revs rise faster than my speed, the warning message pops up shortly after 'Transmission Service Required' followed by limp mode were it jolts into 4th gear and stays there permanently. Spoke to an auto repair specialist familiar with these boxes and he confirmed my suspicion that the clutch in the torque converter that locks it out is worn out and needs new friction plates. So in effect my transmission is just like a manual car with a worn out slipping clutch, however fixing it is allot more complex and expensive. The ECM-5310 DTC looks to be a red hearing and has cost me loads of time checking things out electrically. Anyway I have learnt allot and am confident that reconditioning the box will resolve my problem. Thanks for all your help. cheers Ben |

Just to cover this one off in case anyone else has the same problem in the future.
The auto transmission oil cooler which is part of the main radiator had split internally allowing engine coolant into the gear box oil. The glycerol in the coolant then prematurely wears the friction linings in the lock up clutch which lives inside the torque converter leading to premature failure. I have now had these friction linings replaced plus the other two clutches in the gearbox, plus a bush which is known to wear. Gear box now back in the car with fresh oil and a new main radiator. Car runs perfectly now and that odd communication error ECM - TCM message has disappeared. Morale of the story if your car starts using coolant then jump on it straight away there is also another engine oil cooler on the back of the sump that can fail in the same manner allowing coolant in to the engine oil. If you have forked out for a new gearbox would advise fitting a separate oil cooler just in case you main rad packs up and trashes your new box |

Thanks for keeping the post updated with your findings. I have the same issue and just received a laptop with VIda and CIDA so about to start the same process.
Before I go any further can you advise how much the full autobox repair cost? Thanks Alan |

This has been an interesting read. Thank you for spending the time writing about your experiences.
I have the fault ECM-5310 only which I cannot source the issue. (I also have the AYC Sensor not calibrated (BCM-0112), which at the moment is the least of my worries). An observation against the repair specialist regarding the friction plates, on occasion I have noticed a hot-clutch / slipping clutch smell. It is interesting as this was a few months ago, but did notice it recently. Maybe this is early signs of the 002F code? My fault seem intermittent as I can hookup VIDA and run diagnostics and then test drive, where I cannot get the fault to re-occur. I can then let the car sit overnight then attempt to use in the morning, 15 mins down the road the fault reoccurs. I say intermittent, once VIDA is hooked up it runs fine, but once it is not, it reoccurs! Ben, can I ask where you had the work done and ball park repair costs? Alan, how far did you get? Sorry about resurrecting this old post but... Xc90 d5 2003 160k
Exactly the same symptoms. Losing coolant - cannot find any leaks externally, I searched and my indi garage searched. Fault code 002f transmission lock up failure. I did the first long journey in my ownership (400miles and back) and had a slight judder and transmission error. Coolant became low as journey continued. I believe I have now to replace transmission and torque converter. I am taking the car back to my indi garage to have oil checked but expect the worst. I assume water ingress will be evident in the oil. Incidentally, currently the car drives fine and selects all gears and no error codes since clearing. Although car is old I am prepared to get it sorted, even though I have spent a fortune this year. I live in Essex, any recommendation of local transmission expert and cost would be very helpful.. I hold my breath.... And a big thanks for the previous posts. John l |

Just noticed I never updated my comments on this thread.
In summer ladt year I replaced the rad and had a full flush of the gearbox. Now, after 5000 miles, no further problems. John l |
