Default 2000 S80 auto trans fluid level check question

Hi

I searched for the answer to this question, but didn't find anything conclusive.

Can someone much more learned than I am confirm whether the engine should be left running when the auto gearbox fluid is checked? If so, I assume the gear selector should be in park, but can you confirm?

Also, why go through the gears? Is it to get the box warmer or for another reason?

I've got the Aisin Warner 5 speed box bye the way

Thanks

Warm up the transmission (10 minute drive Summer, 30 minutes in Winter)
With the engine running go slowly through the gear range selector's range stopping at each detent for a full second. Go P to L then back to P.

Leave the engine running and check the fluid level within 20 seconds.

People have asked the "why row the gear range selector" question before and I've never seen an answer.

How many miles on your 2000?

138,000 miles. I've been doing the gradual flush. 6 litres of JWS 3309 so far, I guess 6 to go.

I'd also think in winter it is risky to measure the level, because the fluid flows continuously through the front radiator. At least, try after driving only inside the city, on motorway the fluid may get cooled down too much. Usually it has to warm to around 60C (not to be confused with the engine coolant temperature, the transmission fluid takes much longer to warm up). If it hasn't reach the right temp, the measure on the dipstick can show a much lower level (the transmission fluid volume expands a lot with the temperatures)

The procedure is alright on pre facelift but on the facelift s60 the air box prevents you sticking arm down to dipstick lol.

But yes officially while running and warmed up
