Question Coding spare keys

My main key is grubby and worn. I want a new one!

If I get a replacement from a scrappy or wherever, I assume I can swap the actual key bit, but can I code the alarm buttons and immobiliser into the new key myself or is it a dealer only job?

I'm sure it'll just be a matter of starting off a sequence and then putting the key in to code it.

Does anyone know?

it shouldent be a prob, but all locks will need to be changed incase of fob problems (so you can open doors n boot) or carry both keys just in case.

if you have a key with a recognition chip inserted, you may well have probs, in which case youd need to take the alarm relay from the car that you get the keys from, and your alarm fob may well be the wrong freqeuncy and youd need a new fob also.

if no key chip, just swap ignition barrel and your fob will still work.

maybe worth getting a price from dealer to replace key, it would save alot of aggro mate.

*whooooooooosh*

That went straight over my head!
I'd be swapping my 'key' (the metal bit) from my key to the new fob so I can still start the car and open the doors with it!

Just wondering if a second hand key could be coded to my alarm/immobiliser, that's all!

Cool, so it can be done? It doesn't have to be a brand spanking new virgin key?
