480 info centre wows
I have just bought a 1990 480ES non cat. I am sure this is a usual problem, the info centre only part works. Some characters part light up and different parts light up when using the selector, fuel gauge does not work but the red warning bar goes off when you add fuel and comes back on when it is used. I would be grateful if somebody could help me sort this out.

The LED table itself is broken so you have to find yourself another infocentre. Be sure to get the right one from a dash with the same colour connectors. You can find these 2 big connectors at the back of the dash. This are the different colour combinations possible: blue&yellow, red&yellow, green&grey for the 45liter tank and green&grey for the 60liter tank.
Here's a pic how to remove the dash:

I wrote a 'how to fix the info center' page on the other 480 forum. Heres the link, http://volvo480.dragons.org.uk/forum...ic.php?t=16973. It requires removal of the clocks, removing the info center and insuring the white strip is connecting the circuit to the info glass. An easy job. If you put pressure on the info center's glass does that help?

info panel
Only from persoanl experiance it was looking like a whole info panel needed but after getting one from scrppy (£5) no diference turned out that there are a pair of multi plugs on the rear of inst binnacle which are JUST long enough to reach the gubbins when whole lot removed and VERY tight to reach when in situ, it might have 'just worked' loose.
My 480 suffers bouts of this and I can just reach it when lying upside down under steering wheel, plug nearest door ( assuming RHD) is the one that has info panel on, from what I remember. Or it might be the wee control knob that has given up the ghost? Easier to haul it out than the inst panel in first instance? Cheers Alan |

I have taken no action so far as sometimes the info centre and fuel gauge work perfectly which makes me think that you could be right, as simple as a poor connection. If you did not live so far away I would ask you to lie under my steering wheel for me! I guess when the weather improves I will have to give that a try.

Will fit but won't work or you have to change the gearbox as well for one from a 400 with an info centre. The 400's gearboxes equipped with an info centre have an electronical driven speedo, the 400's without info centre have a mechanical (cable) driven speedo.

I have to say, I think everyone is over complicating things, you just need to smash it one short and sharp on the top, mine does it on either really hot or bitterly cold days.
Percussive maintanence FTW! |
