Is it all doors not turning light on or just drivers door, does the light still work with manual switch when doors fail to turn it on.

It's Volvo's way to save power and increase the lifespan of the bulbs: the dash illumination, instrument illumination and interior lamps only need to be on when it's dark

So go and check it at nighttime.

The sensor for "day/night" or "light/dark" is in the same housing as the alarm led; rather than wait 'til dark just drop a glove over the sensor, wait a moment and see the audio display and cabin lights change state.

Be aware that the "moment" is 20 seconds.
I counted it when I entered a Tunnel once.
