Ive followed his issues keenly and if he says its fixed, by changing the PCV, then its must be right ! Thanks osullivant, for keeping us updated.

The PCV is approx £25-30 but its a bugger to get to and change unless you drop the front of the oil filter housing, you will lose some oil this way too, but easier than removing pipe work that covers the top left screw (mines a 185 engine), You will need a new gasket as well if you move the oil filter housing.

Hi Colin, do you have a part number for the PCV and gasket by any chance?

Thanks Darryl

no need to remove the oil filter housing, the pipes are held with a few hex head bolts (10mm) these are easy to remove and then the pipes can be shoved aside to get at the torx screws on PCV valve...

My mechanic is confident it is not the pcv valve as when he put his finger over the end there was minimal pressure he said if it was faulty it would have blown his finger off, he also said that an oil burning problem could be a vast array of issues that wouldnt be cost effective to persue, does anyone aggree? i have a free diagnostic session with volvo next week so i think i am gong to chuck it into them and get hem to explore excessive oil usage.

This is the worst car i have ever bought!

The PCV valve is 27 Euro and is the one thing that you have not changed. I would disregard your mechanics advice, buy a valve, fit it and see what happens.

O' sullivant has had far worse problems than you are currently experiencing and he has already, within this thread told you to change the PCV valve.

He has done all of the work on his engine and I really think that you should take his advice.

I have recently bought a 2007 XC90 D5 and although not experiencing any problems, with 119k on the clock I have ordered a PCV valve and will be fitting it as matter of course that's how seriously I take his advice on this particular matter.

Your mechanic is not putting his finger on the end of the pipe that is connected to the air intake near the turbo,

My theory is that it is suction from this end with the turbo at full speed, added to the pressure from the front end that is vacuming the oil into the air intakes... this explains not just the oil in the DPF but also in the intake manifolds and associated pipework,

remember that after doing rings and DPF clean I still had "soot filter full after 100mls" with some oil consumption... all of this stopped ONLY AFTER pcv valve change...

my car just spent the week driving in the city and up country roads at lowish speed and still no issues... my mpg is still not as good as i'd like but in snow last weekend the car was super...

When my 2007 has exactly the same symptoms (2 litres of oil in 400 miles) and eventually a full soot filter I disconnected the PCV and ran it to a catch tank whilst blanking off the manifold end.
This made no difference to the oil consumption at all and it was still chugging out blue smoke clouds when accelerating from the overrun.
I think in Osullivants case the PCV was a contributor to the problem but the main issue was the piston rings. Volvo and an independent all diagnosed worn/faulty piston rings.

I would try changing the PCV first as it’s so cheap but be prepared for it not to cure the problem completely.
