CEM: Central Electronics Module for S40

Hi all,
Sorry, I had some trouble creating a new thread earlier, but it's working now.
(thread 'unable to post....' was created, but as the title doesn't relate to my question, I decided to post this new one in case someone overlooked the original)
- hope that's ok!

So... I need advice on a part for my S40:
I need to find a 'central electronic module', and it's eur500+vat from volvo, or 35-pounds from some lad on eBay but the part number is different there. I wanted to ask people if they thought that mattered (the eBay seller lists the item as being ok for S40's or V40's, but as it is the CEM, i thought maybe i'd have to get the precise part number.

Would any of you know whether it MUST BE the exact part number if you were to replace the CEM?
I've tried several dismantlers and they all sold whatever ones they had long ago (seems like a part in demand!)

(btw: it is the little silver box underneath (and just to the right of) the steering wheel)

Why do you need the CEM? Is it a headlight that won't work? There is a post on here, somewhere, that explains how to solder in a replacement part onto the board but it does sound entirely feasible it might be too adventurous for some. I would have thought that the same part number would be required as well - perhaps Volvo can help to confirm if other part number alternatives would suit then you have a larger choice of second hand stuff to pick from. Try some of the specialist Volvo breakers out of yellow pages.

Hi coupeboy,
Yeah the CEM needs to be replaced apparently - basically one, and then both headlights stopped working. I checked the bulbs and they looked fine. Nevertheless I replaced them, but to no avail.
The local mechanic checked the power supply to the 'sockets'(?) or contact-points where the wires plug into the lights, and all was fine, so there was power getting to the lights, but they wouldn't work.
He re-wired the headlights a bit (wired the high-beam to the dips), and that worked for a while but they went again.
We got another lad to take a look - now we have the switch for the fog lights activating the dips, but this re-wire is only temp until the root cause is fixed (ie, the CEM is replaced).

Thanks for the tips anyway - reckon you are right about the part number....bit risky unless its the exact one.
I've google'd some specialist breakers, so I'm just thrawling through the results now to find someone.
