Yes my dad had a new P6 V8S and in it's day it was lively. He also had a new Triumph 2.5PI Estate and I always thought that it was a stylish car.

What about Vauxhall, according to the latest adverts 'A British brand since 1903' ?

It may had been a British brand in 1903 but was acquired by GM and now owner is a German company who are owned by a French company. some are UK built but most are built as Opels and badged Vauxhall to be sold in the UK. In fact its only called Vauxhall in the UK so they can claim to be British., would sales suffer if they had the Opel badge on I doubt it.

Many years ago when there were Vauxhall and Opel dealers you could buy the same car under different badges[just as now a lot of people put the Opel Blitz in place of the Vx Griffin]but the Opel was seen as a more upmarket vehicle although it could well have come down the same production line. The Opel was also at least 1 insurance group higher than the Vauxhall as it was an "import".Will the LR Discovery still be "British" as production is moving to Slovakia-or already has done, and JLR are owned by the Indian Tata conglomerate anyway?

I don't know how far you are going back Dippy, but in the 1970s Vauxhalls and Opels were very different...the Vauxhall lineup

Viva
Chevette
Firenza
Victor & Ventora (FD & FE).

The Opels

Kadett (C)
Commodore (B)
Manta (A)

Think I've got that right ! Never owned by the Germans, GM (American) then and now the PSA Group (French).

You missed the obvious one, Cavalier Mk1 and relative Ascona. Great RWD cars. My Dad had the 2 door version and handled so much better than mk 5 Cortina he replaced it with. Cool rally cars too.

Two posts above mention rust - when ? We had a number BL cars in the family, all bought new and kept for quite sometime, not one had rust when sold -

Austin A40 (kept for over 20 years)
Rover P5
MGB GT
Triumph 2500 estate (3.0 Triumph Stag engine)
Austin 1800
Wolseley Six
Austin Princess (1.7)
Austin Metro VdP.

Jon.

N.B see the poster above has a V40...they're not exactly free from tinworm at an early age.
