It works 99% of the time for me with the first kick. Find out where the sensor is for your car (you don't state what model you have) and the do a forward kick there and step back. It's not a sideways swipe underneath.

>95% success, brilliant feature. But, you do need to get the action right. So a single kick forward under the bumper, left of centre, aim roughly to be under the left edge of your number plate and then step back slightly as your leg comes back. Don't wave your foot left and right, just a single motion in under the bumper and then out again. I don't know if the car can sense you stood very close, but I do always seem to get greater success if I just step back slightly as my leg comes back.

Don't ever copy a car journalist on youtube trying this feature, those idiots don't read a manual, or learn anything before trying the cars feature and then pronounce it a gimmick that rarely works. **bugs me**!!!

Same here (as in everytime)

My youngest was 4 when I got it (XC90) and often tried to "help". She generally just gave the underside of the bumper an almighty boot though, so I had her stand back a bit and used the remote to open it as she swung her leg

If it was that simple and easy to do it's surprising and somewhat suspicious that Volvo didn't have a real person demonstrating it

Works for me most of the time. A fairly slow kick forward and back. My sensor is just under the LHS of the number plate.

I think even if Volvo did use a real person, they'd be rather unlikely (to put it mildly) to show that person randomly waving their leg about and would show it working first time. As I find, it nearly always does.

I'd imagine the format of the video is a style decision for a consistent presentation (and avoiding a video shoot).

90% of complains about SPA cars are by people who need to take some time to adapt to the new features/technologies. Me included- for occasional rants about the navi, GUI layout in Sensus etc
