Default XC60: Does your bonnet "bonk" when pressed down?

A few days ago, I took a look under the bonnet for the first time and then closed it after making sure I knew where bits were.

After closing, I noticed a bit of a rebound. And sure enough, if I press down on the closed bonnet, it'll rebound with a bit of a "bonk".

I've not noticed this with other cars I've owned (usually there's a bit of rubber to hold it). Is this normal with the XC60? I've not noticed any rattling while driving.

My first thoughts are that it's designed to be like that due to safety... you also have pedestrian airbag so would probably have something to do with that too?

I can't say I have ever noticed.

Pete.
This is normal, there was a similar thread on this back in 2019 that confirmed this.

Ah, fine. Thanks for that. Just seemed a bit odd.

Just to confirm what simonjedrake said...

I asked the guy at official Volvo dealership/service here about that, and promptly he said to me: come here, take a look...
There were 5-6 xc60's parked in the parking lot, he went to each one, with me in tow, and pressed to each of their bonnets - they all did the same.

He said it's by design, it absorbs a significant part of energy on pedestrian impact. So I was convinced.

Yes, makes perfect sense since there's no bodywork in front of the bonnet to crumple before a pedestrian hits it.

Odd that my old Macan didn't do this, but Volvo are different of course..!

I don't think XC60 has Pedestrian Airbag.

Interesting, I have just noticed on my new (to me)2021 xc60 B5 Diesel that when I have closed the bonnet I can then push it down a further inch but it springs back to the closed position, I was going to take it back to the dealer but reading this post it seems designed that way...I wonder
