Can I go to the nearest chippy and but a huge drum of vegetable oil and drop it into my D5 S60 tank (Maybe with a little petrol to mix it up a little??)

OH GOD NO!!!!

It would work with an older (Read 940 diesel kind of older) diesel, with indirect fuel injection and an all mechanical fuel system, but a D5 is a big no no.

D5s are a Common-rail, direct injection diesel engine, using much higher delivery pressure in much more precise quantities.

Veg oil is just too thick and can make a real pig's ear of everything I'm afraid.

Also, if you get caught running on anything other than pump diesel on the road, there is a whopping fine... Something like £60,000. I've never used veg oil on the road, or been to Costco and bought 20 litre drums, 5 at a time... Honest officer!!

Agree with the above: fine for an older engine with mechanical injection system, but not for the modern engine. It can cause all sorts of problems with the seals and will clog the filter up much quicker.

They have relaxed the rules on the use of veg oil and I believe you can use 2000 litres a year without paying duty. Plenty of folk running around on veg oil, especially in older Land Rovers. You can usually smell the tell-tale whiff of chips!
