I would take it back to your Dealer for them to resolve as the car is new, rather than mess about yourself.

A build up of insect crap containing plant products eg nectar, can build up and cause a smear.

The volvo blades aren't brilliant I must say... My V60 is under a year old /21'000 miles and the volvo blades front and rear were smearing so changed to Bosch and no problem.

Drove a MY18 plate V40 the other day with 2000 miles and the volvo blades were already smearing!

I have never found blades better than volvo they last up to 50000 miles … there is a lot of diesel fuel mist blowing around out there ...

Wiper blades need cleaning regularly to avoid smearing - I wash my car every week (weather permitting) and always clean the blades whilst cleaning the rest of the car.

On a monthly basis, I use Auto Glym Glass Polish on all the outside glass and also on the front & rear wiper blades - I have never had a problem with smearing wiper blades.

I know a lot of people don’t like cleaning their cars regularly, but if you don’t keep your windscreen clean, then there is a chance that your blades won’t work to their optimum capabilities.

I have the same issue as you 2021 V60 and still unable to fix this issue.
Changed a new Blade and still having the smear once returning to position.

My old XC60 was flawless, wipers cleared the screen first time every time until they needed changing and the new ones were good from the go.

My new car, on the other hand, seems to be the same. It leaves a smear on the drivers side on the return stroke but up stroke is fine. Has done it since I collected the car and currently still using the screen wash the car came with (I'm assuming its Volvo stuff but who knows).
I have checked the blades and they look and feel fine. Cant really see the point in replacing the blades if its gonna keep doing the same so will just live with it until service time and get Volvo to look at it.

If you have a word with your dealer they should fit a new one without question.

I need to agree the original Volvo blades are far superior than any other brand (Bosch, Valeo etc). On our 2018 XC60 lasted almost 4 years and 50k km without any smearing and were still usable but not the best ofc. Yes they could last a bit longer but the hot summer and salty winter are not the best combo imo.
I also wash our cars in a regular basis minimum two times a month and also clean the wiper blades with microfibre wash mitt. Never had any visibility issue.
