Default Lucky keyring under the carpet!’

Hello folks.

I just became the owner of a very nice 2006 V70. Literally during my maiden voyage in it, my prized lucky keyring fell down the side of the seat and, as far as I can tell, slipped through a small manufacturer’s split in the carpet directly underneath it.

(I may have been dropped on my head too many times but to put this into context: if I was fleeing a burning building, other than my loved ones that keyring would be the first thing that I would save.)

I’ve tried poking around through the joins in the darkest with an extendable magnet, but no joy; my initial frantic efforts to free it seem to have shoved it right back under there. I really don’t want to take a Stanley knife to the carpet as the interior is in really nice condition but I will if I have to, but I thought i’d check on here first: is there a way to get fully under that carpet without destroying it—I.e some method for removing it and replacing it without damaging anything—or having to completely remove the seat and put it back again?

There is of course the option of therapy but it’s very expensive and hey, we are in the middle of a national mental health crisis after all...

Thanks for your time reading this unusual thread either way. Smashing car BTW, it’s my first one.

Does this keyring have your Volvo key on it? If so, that is a very large key to have just "slipped through a small manufacturer’s split in the carpet". Are you absolutely sure it didn't bounce and go somewhere completely different such as into the passenger or rear footwell?

I am sure if you took the seat out (not difficult) then you would be able to get a much better access to enable you to it back.

Could you make a picture of where it went through the carpet?
If it's close to the front of the seat then you could get away with removing the driver legroom carpet, which needs removing the front seat bolts, and access under the front of the carpet that sits under the driver seat. If it's more to the back then You would need to lift the carpet from underneath the rear seats.

Before you start taking the carpet up or out check underneath the seat runners, things can easily get trapped under them but can be slid out using a thin plastic ruler or similar.

Thanks for all the replies so far folks. No the keys weren’t on it! 😁The actualmkeyring part broke off it a long time ago. It’s not under the runners unfortunately... it definitely slipped through further back, in fact to be more precise (and I should have mentioned this at the start) I think it slipped down at about the point where the seat recliner dial sits on the right hand side of the seat. It went though at the back for certain; do you think that the only way to get the rear carpet up without cutting it is to take the seat out?

You mentioned prodding with a magnet. The lucky fob is of ferrous metal, yes?. Just checkin'
Descriptive details, please.

An oddly enthusiastic lady insisted on throwing a penny into my first V70 for good luck. I've transferred that same coin into my subsequent two V70's.

a) It might be OK since your talisman in IN the car.

b) A deer ran INTO MY CAR last month so how much good luck is realized is debatable.

I remove the stainless steel stiffeners from spent wiper bladess for occasions such as these.

I'd start by taking the scrap strip off the sill and trying to edge the carpet up a little to gain access and also checking in and under the rear floor vents before I removed the seat. NB if you do remove the seat disconnect the battery for at least ten minutes before you attempt to pull the seat wiring plugs to avoid setting off the seat air bags & tensioners.
