I'd imagine they're in the 30's/40's.

On the motorway I doubt there is enough in it to warrant a diesel, I can just about stretch 40 out of the T5 on long commutes.

Around town is terrible though, talking 23-26 tops

Whaaa?
u for real? I have never seen average higher than 30 on mine and its when I drive 60MPH in highway with cruise control on (with a proper grandda' hat on :P ) but reality is I never do as I drive very aggresively. Actual average on daily comute (half country roads half city traffic) is 23-24 max and only when I try hard.

Yep! It can be done, I find the bigger engines are naturally happier cruising at slightly higher speeds, cruise control at 70mph for an hour or so will easily see around 38mpg in mine.

Sadly I only do these a few times a year as I live 6 miles away from work and most of my other journeys are fairly short, hence the average 24mpg at the moment

Riight... so its more like "ideal lab conditions" preferably with empty fuel tank and stomach if possible?
gonna check that today on few km stretch of highway, will set CC to 100kmh and check avg consumption.
my cruise control will get heart attack from being finally used...

Nah it's not that bad, I'm hardly driving like a nun with a feather foot. If I was doing the 70 mile round commute per day like I was in the T4 it probably wouldn't be too bad, though I'd likely have a D5 for the few extra MPG.

On motorway with a bit of spirited driving though, it'll happily be sat in the 30's

I always use super unleaded, it'll help a little with MPG but not by any huge margins.

Not a bad guess at all, now I've nipped up a boost leak (still slight upon checking yesterday) and moving back to BP Ultimate diesel I'm getting 38mpg again, grannying about will see early 40's and best I've had on a motorway run is 55mpg!

I'm averaging 26mpg doing a 16 mile round trip to work including an even mix of open country roads, dual carriageway and a heavy crawl into the town.

I've had 40mpg on long easy A-roads before and 36mpg on motorways.
