Default 1989 - 740 Estate Corrosion Points

I found some corrosion, which when suitable prodded opened up as a small hole in the drivers footwell by my right foot. This hole is elongated and runs alongside the reinforcing plate which meets the main longitudinal box section.

Welding in a small plate should fix it, but it occurs to me that some of you souls will have been down this path before, and know where the corrosion trouble spots are on the 740 estate, so that I can check them.

Any information would be welcome.

Regards

Ah ha!! Yet another victim of the Ol' tin worm;(

Mine is a 1989 760GLE and guess what ...mine had EXACTLY the same problem ;(

So.... Where does this beasty "Rust" ?? Well, all the corners of all the box sections, look closely for bubbled underseal in the corners, look at the mounting points on the rear axle, as there is a narrow gap between this and the inner sill, it's the inner sill that goes at this point, it's located just forward of either rear wheel. Then there's the Stooooooooopid idea of fiTting a seam on the OUTSIDE of the wheel arch exposed to all the elements, this allows the water to force the seams apart from the outside, look up into the wheel arch towards the windscreen and look at the seam you'll find It may have started lifting and allowing water into the footwells of the car. The rot applies to the rear footwells as well, anywhere there are corners. It sounds although your car was rustproofed the same way as mine, whereby the corners were not acid dipped to clean off any contamination before applying the rustproofing.

DO NOT plate this as it will only comeback, the best way to treat this is to cut out the rotten metal and replace, whilst welding use a zinc weld through primer, then treat for rust with an inhibitor, then paint two to three times in "Red Lead" Then paint as normal, maybe even coat in waxoyl.

Hopefully this will help and let you enjoy your machine/baby longer}(

Hi Dave, Thanks for that.

I spent some time cleaning off the offending spot and marking out
where I intend to cut it out, prior to welding in a new piece.

I shall have to try to get the beast onto some ramps so I can investigate some of the points you raised.

Many thanks again
