Default xc90 D5 2006 code 42

Orange triangle came on yesterday accompanied by "ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED MESSAGE" - car massively down on power, runs smoothly and accelerates very slowly upto motorway speeds but feels as if there's no turbo boost at all & Hessitant.

Holding Trip Reset in whilst turning key to position 2 initially showed code 042

Drove home and boost would come and go - sometimes the car would accelerate as normal, sometimes no power at all.

EGR Is clean, Swirl flaps working, Cant find any splits in intercooler pipes, vac pipes all look good.

Will be changing the fuel filter later today as this is a cheap item before I get any deeper.

I would suggest you need a full code read with a suitable reader, the code you have is not very useful - in short could mean anything.
Are you sure the intercooler charge pipe seal is good? I've had this go twice on mine, giving similar issues to yours, get underneath and listen for the characteristic phff phff as you rev the engine.

Default Update

Update.

Intercooler is leaking from the front - replacement to follow soon.
Also found vac leak on front and rear engine mounts. ( isolated these two for now to diagnose the rest of the system) boost valve is working as it should by the air box when tested and all vac lines.

When replacing the swirl arm...

I have also found swirl flap engine side has I believe to be very loose going to the engine. Is this normal ?

I suspect this has become loose. When moved back and forth engine note does change so I believe the flaps are still opening and closing. But with this loose would it create a vac leak ?

Many thanks all

Update

I’ve got the lower engine mounts to do front and rear.

Rear parking sensor 3.

Fixed the anti skid message by calibrating the module with a friends vida dice , how lucky !! Put a message out on Facebook and a friend replied he had Vida dice so well happy 😁.

Got some new engine oil to put in when the time allows.

Vac leak was coming from engine cap so new rubber o ring sorted that out !

Swirl flaps to do in the future but are currently working and not leaking engine side just scarily loose .
