The Mob1 oil on ther computer is recommended upgrade oil for the car over and above a standard semi syn. It meets the required ACEA B4 stipulated in the cars hanbdbook and definately is the real deal supplied in silver 45 gal drums. The only reservation I have about going for it is that its not Mob1 Diesel. They obviously buy the standard Mob1 in bulk and use it in both petrol and diesel cars. As this oil is the non deisel Mob1 variety would it be ok for my S60 D5?
Anyone with any info on this as the oil/filter changes at KF are far cheaper than anything you could do yourself using full syn. Im planning on changing the oil every 6K.
Would this be ok?
Modern diesels all (including your D5) seem to reccommend duel petrol/diesel oils. Standard ? Mobil 1 isn't a bad oil but it's not the best either, Mobil themselves and other several other manufacturers make even better ones now.

My reservation about KF would be how do they remove the oil? These cheap oil change guys often use a vacum type machine and suck it out through the oil filler. Very bad practice in my opinion as the dirtiest oil from the sump is going to be pulled up into the body of the engine and some dirty oil is going to be left behind. I'd insist on them doing it the proper way if it was my engine, unless you don't plan to keep it long that is.

All the best.
Roy

It would be good to know the oils that give few extra MPG with price of fuel these days and what are the best additives to add to the oil for better power and MPG.

It seems buying the right oil is a mine field and totally confusing.

I am surprised auto trader and which hasn't done a test for the best oil.

I have just bought some Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 0W-30, for £7 per litre (del in 5 litre containers) from Germany via ebay.

A good oil won't require any additives and most makers of good oil would reel at the very thought. To get the best in MPG and protection you must go thin, 0w-30 5w-30 or 10-30 (less resistance) and tough for protection. This equals a top and expensive oil but it will quickly pay you back especially with petrol prices being what they are now. It should also last longer than 'normal' oils again saving money. Do not be tempted by deals on 0w-40 as this is stretching the oil index a bit much and such oils will generally break down. Castrol edge is good, Amsoil S2000 0w-30 is better (and at a club discount) If you want to know how much of the good stuff is in the oil look at the TBN, numbers over 8 are high in the expensive additives already (Amsoil is 12+ from memory) Hope this assists.

Where in Germany did you get this from ? I just had my car serviced by Volvo Germany and they do not use Castrol Edge. They use Castrol TXT. I contacted Castrol in the UK and they do not recommend this oil for the D5.

So...Volvo recommend Castrol, Volvo Germany recommend Castrol TXT and Castrol UK do not recommend that oil for Volvo D5 engines !

When the two manufacturers cannot even agree what is the right oil to use what chance does the man in the street stand ?

That'll be why the main dealer in Fife uses Havoline oil (according to the receipt issued) !?!

That document must be out of date because Castrol R-tec is no longer made having been superceded in 2006 by Castrol SLX professional longtech 0/30 for Volvo cars ACEA A5/B5.

I was told my 2003 XC90 D5 engine came from the factory filled with Castrol R-tec. and that's what the main dealer who serviced contiued to use. Different dealers use alternative oils but it sounded sweeter that the other 5 cars with a D5 engines I test drove when I was looking for a second hand XC90, so I've no complaints about it.

2000 0W-030 is Amsoils top of the range oil (and what's going into my car next) The club discount is 10% and delivery is free for the quantity you need for an oil change.
