Angry Engine Service Required

I have Volvo S80 2.5D 2006, 58,000 miles, for the last 2 years when I pull my caravan and put my foot down to pass on motorway or going up hills, Engine Service Required message comes on and car goes into limp mode. Have been to various garages over 2 years but still no answer to cure problem. One said service mounting attached to vacuum was cracked and was replaced. Vacuum pressure came up and said it would now be OK. However next time I took caravan out there was the same problem. ,
Garages cannot find problem surely Volvo must know a solution as there appears to be many Volvos with the same problem. I am at my wits end trying to solve the problem. Driving without the caravan there has been no problem but over the last 2 weeks same problem has occured when not pulling caravan, stopped turned off engine and restarted all was the OK, Any suggestions

Some people on here have had a similar issue on D5's - from what I remember one of the turbo or intercooler hoses goes soft and collapses when giving it some beans.

It will be worth a search to find a proper description.

Hi,sorry too here of your problem.Have any of these garages that you have been to ever plugged a code reader into your car?.If so,what were the fault code's?.

If the code's have never been read then it need's doing then you can work from there.

Their could be member's on here in your area that could hopefully do it for you, anyone.

Isn't the Boost Pressure Regulator a common fault on the D5s?

I have the same fault on my S60 2.4 D5 and the error codes were "Boost Pressure too high", "Boost Pressure too low", "MAF Sensor signal error".

So I suspect faulty / dirty MAF and / or boost pressure regulator issues in my case but of course don't take my word for it as I'm no mechanic and will wait to see what the indie makes of it first

Hi Moonstone.

I like to think that all D5 owners can be placed into one of the following categories - Those that have suffered from the famous Engine Service Required fault and those that will suffer from the famous Engine Service Required fault.

Like you, I was recently at my wits end with the same fault (As soon as I was driving up a slight hill or I was accelerating above 3,500rpm, the same message would appear and the car would go into Limp mode).

Unfortunately, the main cause of stress for me was that there isn't one single point of fault that anyone (even by using the code reader) could point me to. It's just one of those things that's going to be a trial by error situation.

By all means, have your Volvo connected to the code reader, but if the only code that it shows up is "6805", then it's going to pretty much be a "change engine parts one by one until the fault is fixed" scenario.

If it does turn out to be the "6805" code, then below are two links to posts of my very own where some fantastic information was given to me on this forum and I've also included some photos.

Best of luck and keep us all posted as to how you get on
