Hi Guys

I'm after your wealth of experience for some guidance.

My daughter was driving her s60 D5 when the fan belt snapped and the engine died.

Since replacing the belt I can no longer get the car to start and its been stuck outside the house for weeks 🤪

It cranks over and almost fires but never actually runs :-(

I had a guy out who told me the timing was out but how could a snapped fan belt make the timing jump ??

I'm no expert but can't belive its timing, unless you lot have experienced that ???

After help and ideas please

Thanks in advance

D x

Sadly, sometimes when the serpentine belt snaps it can affect the cam belt. Sounds like the cam belt might have jumped a tooth or so. That could explain your problem. If you are lucky, it’s just slipped and not damaged the valves. Check the cam belt timing might be worth doing. Fingers crossed for you and good luck.

Ah bugger there doesn't sound like any unwarranted sounds while it cranks so hopefully its not touched the valves !!

Is there a guide kicking about for this model with regards timing ? Quick glance is 5 cylinder with a rather huge engine mount blocking access to the cover although I've a rather large hammer that may help lol

The guy Cheshire on here has some great videos on YouTube.

Here’s a link to his info on on Cambelt fitting. See if it helps?

Unfortunately, it’s very common for a failing alternator belt (fan belt) to tangle in the cambelt and either derail it completely or make it jump a few teeth.

Hopefully retiming it will set things right, but be prepared for internal damage.

Also, if it is found that the timing has slipped, it might be worth changing the cam belt now as it might well have been damaged.

Hi Dutcho. Personally, I have never changed a Cambelt, having only ever replaced a serpentine belt and tensioner.

However, looking at the Video on You tube, I wonder if you might be able to see the timing marks on the crankshaft from above, without removing the pulley? I have attached a couple of screen grabs to show what I mean.

I guess the Overhead cam timing marks are fairly easy to see once the plastic cam cover has been removed.

I've gone against the rule book and did a best guess to see it it starts, noticed on vids the location pin on pulley is at 12 o'clock but cam mark was 3 teeth out.

Its started so I'm thinking shes got away with it ill get pulley off now and get it **** on

Cheers guys such a helpful forum ill let you know when jobs complete although it might not be tomorrow :-)

Wont let me upload the vid but doesnt sound bad at all
