Default Faulty ignition switch key barrel??

I would appreciate some experienced advice....

For a while now if I select key position I on the ignition key there is a clicking noise and the dash control lights which would normally illuminate do so with the relay clicking noise. Switching to position II cures this, pushing to III starts the car as normal and the car runs as normal.

However, yesterday I started to experience this fault also on key position II. I turned on the ignition to drop the windows but they would not work initially. I turned the key on and off to position II a few times and it everything started to work as normal.

I am trying to prevent a breakdown here by fixing this before I get totally stuck! I would guess that I have a worn ignition key switch or faulty related relay module somewhere?

Please can someone point me in the right direction based on experience? Thanks....
