Default Newer style key refresh/transplant

After seeing the following post on Swedespeed.com I decided to follow the instructions to turn our shabby second key into a new looking one...

http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthr...-key&p=2053944

I bought an as new key off eBay for about £24 and embarked on transplanting the RFID chip and the circuit board from my key to the new one. Splitting the new key open took some time although my own one came apart very easily. I used standard superglue to put it back together again. The result is attached with the original key pictured on the left and the finished article on the right. About 30 minutes work all in. I used electrical tape to "clamp" it back together for a coupe of hours after gluing the two sides together again.

Hope it helps anyone that doesn't like a shabby key.

Iain

Iain, do you have any details for the "repair kit" for the older (yellow button) remote that you mention on that Swedespeed thread (part no.?) pls. The one for the S40 I've bought for SWMBO is missing the blade latch and screw and is held together with tape (think it's been driven over!) although it works. I'd like to make it "nice" again if possible (and to reduce the nagging about the "nasty key").

Edit: Might it be this kit?

Thanks, ordered the one from Braydon as I've dealt with them before. (and they were slightly cheaper)

Glad I tried taking apart the new donor key and not my actual key for the car... Lets up it this way, the donor key didn't want to open and got F-ed up!! Snapped one side of the key and the outer casing just got munched up and unusable. The RFID chip gets smashed up to bits in the process.

I advise anyone trying this. Take the donor key apart first and get the idea that if you brake it the first time you will break it the second time and ultimately be left with only one working key.....

I didn't have to but it might be an idea to heat the key first with a hairdryer to soften the glue before trying to prise it open.

That's an idea. I'll give this knackered one another go and see how it gets on. Got nothing to loose now.

I'm confused, here's the one (and only) key I was given back in 2009 when I bought my '05 S40 from a Volvo Franchise, the key has been used daily and 'done' 45,000 miles-worth's of use and there's not a mark on it.

And it looks different to Iain's:

That's an early style key mate. Volvo actually do a replacement button kit for them so that you can replace the buttons. On the new style fobs theres no such kit.

So the early keys are better made? sounds about right.

To be honest I'm thinking my key looks more modern than Iain's, weird.
