Default "Whirring" noise

My 2007 V70 D5 185ps (108k) has developed a whirring noise from the engine / transmission area. The pitch / frequency increases with revs but cannot be heard when engine is revved when car is stationary. Any suggestions as to possible causes or fault finding would be appreciated.

You may have an issue with a wheel bearing or it could be something as simple as a rubber arch lining or similar making slight contact with the tyre.

Mystery solved. Local Indy did a 126k service today and discovered that whirring noise stopped when a/c switched off. Almost certainly a/c pump / compressor on its way out. Approx £600 to repair when it finally dies so I'll just have to make do without it and wind down the windows instead!
