My tyre guy who has been in the business over 40 years says there is nothing to beat Uniroyal Rainsport 5 at the moment

Since you've replaced the bushings in the rear trailing arms already, they shouldn't be the reason. Unless something wrong with the job itself.
Shock absorbers are probably the next item to look at.
On a dry day any reasonable tire should work without sliding.

The only remaining thing is that you got some sort of Colin McRae virus...

I think we are looking at tyres. They are probably around 5 years old because I got them fitted just after buying the car

In theory, if the trailing arms have been replaced, then that rules them out.

Your tyres aren't 'that' old, but still, they're cracked. This would be my first port of call.

I've found the same issue when looking for tyres for my car (websites giving different info). The most reliable site I found was Halfords, at that particular time anyway.

Did the car have an alignment after the trailing arms were replaced? When your old tyres come off, take note if there's any excessive wear on the edges. That may indicate an alignment issue, which won't help with grip. You need to replace the tyres replaced anyway, so its worth a look.

Have you checked the shock absorbers in the rear for any leaks?

I am going to sort news tyres ASAP. Just been looking at those uniroyal 5's, they do look good. Tyres on the drive have them at £151 each.

I will look at the shocks ASAP. No I didn't have alignment done after the shocks. Perhaps It may pay to get a full alignment all round after the tyres have been replaced?

Etyres are even cheaper. £124 each fitted.

You mean the trailing arms? By right, an alignment should have been done after they were replaced. As soon as you remove suspension parts like that, the steering geometry is altered and you never get it back the same, hence the need for an alignment. If you don't align it, you risk putting stress on other components, particularly the tyres.

You need new tyres anyway, as you know, so its not wasted money. Get them replaced and get a full 4-wheel alignment done. If you still notice problems after that, then I suspect rear shocks. I don't think they're cheap on an AWD though (if they're Nivomat). Hopefully they're okay, but big money otherwise.

You can tell if you have Nivomat shocks by looking at the shock in the rear itself. A standard shock is quite thin, a Nivomat looks like it has a big rubber cylinder around it. Standard shocks are much cheaper.

Visually - See if there's any leaks.

Driving - Do you notice the car is bouncy on the back end? Does it knock over bumps? Or when you load it, does it sag down too much like its overloaded?
