By the sound of it, although being an old engine its more sturdy than its DCI younger brother? I never knew which Renault lump it was but still, does seem odd but still the Volvo was a mash of Volvo-Mitsubishi anyways, so why not a part from somewhere else as well!!

I'm fairly sure it's the Renault 1.9 DCi (common rail) engine with a few small changes. The Mitsubishi Carisma was the same.

If you look in a Haynes manual for Renault DCI's of that age, there were two options: One had a full EGR system, and the other was a simpler system with a solenoid in place of the EGR valve, etc.
The S/V40 uses the second, simpler type (well mine does anyway).

The carisma would make a good donar, fairly sure they are identical to the 40's

Volvo had some kind of tie up with Renault back in the day of the 440.

I recall the 1.7 440 was powered by the same engine as the 1.7 Renault 5's etc [OMG!!]

Well I personally don't like the Dci. Quite diesel and good economy too but in the Renault guise - quite a fragile unit.

I think basically very sensitive to oil changes, i.e. Renault suggested 18k services which just didn't suit the Dci hence EGR's getting fouled up - causing running issues - and in worst case - BOOM!

I ran a 53 plate Clio dci80 changed the oil at every 6k on fully synth with genuine filters and it ran fine, but i know of many that wasn't so lucky.

Same, seems if the DCi makes it past the 18k mark they survive fairly well, but prone to turbo's now.I've heard that before about the oil changes too, maybe the same idea would save the turbos aswell

For a dci background have a nosey on the Parker website forum. There's a massive thread on there relating to dci blow ups (under laguna I think) and Renaults reluctance to react in a positive way.

Key with any engine really (certainly turbo'd ones and diesels) regular oil changes with a quality oil keeps a car healthy.

For the sake of £40 or so every 6 months it will (help) preserve the life of the motor/turbo.

from what i am aware 01-04 is the dci f9q engine (think it has swedish steel internals though) and slightly tuned down than the renaults run. volvo ran it at 102/115bhp with the difference being the turbos (gt 15 on the 102 and the gt17 on the 115) and renault ran them at 120 and 130bhp
