Default transmission oil?

Can someone tell me what type of gear oil I should be using with my 1998 V40 2lt non turbo manual box.
User manual specifies synthetic and gives volvo part no. What I need to know is what is the equivelent oil spec, so I can just grap a cheap one of the shelve at my local motor factor.

I've a suspicion that you'll be told only Volvo oil will do.

You will find that the proper Volvo oil maybe be even cheaper than Halfords or others so why put any other in?

The recommended for the `97 V70 manual is only £9 per litre!

Rather than continuning to moan about the price and longevity of dealer parts vs OE, I thought I'd become a more helpful forum member.

Here's the best post I've found - stolen from one by @Clan

'The Genuine Volvo FULLY SYNTHETIC gearbox oil is the best to use You cant get better.
Capacity is 2.1 Litres

1 litre 31280 771
4 litre 31280 772
This oil is fully synthetic transmission oil for manual gearboxes
with excellent shifting and synchronising properties at all
temperatures, especially at low temperatures. Being a low
friction oil, the temperature in the transmission is reduced.
Viscosity is low, which means reduced fuel consumption which
in turn means less environmental impact.
The oil is recommended for all model years of type M65
(5-speed with 6-cyl. engine), M66, MTX75 and MMT6 and of
the type M56, M58 and M59 from and including model year
1996.
Technical data
Quality: API GL-4
Ford specification
WSS-M2C200-D2
Viscosity: SAE 75W
Color: Brown
Density: 852 kg/m³
Base: Synthetic base oil
Lowest flow point -54°C
Viscosity at +40°C: 32 mm²/s
Viscosity at +100°C: 6.4 mm²/s'

The thread did relate to a ph2 T4, but I'm making an assumption it's the same 'box.

Thanks everybody,
Sounds mostly like I should go for Volvo brand. If I get shocked at the main dealer I'll let you all know.

Only walk into a main dealer as a last resort. Try Rufe or look up Skandix or one of the main Volvo dealers on the net to see if they are cheaper.
Castrol and Liqui Moly both do gearbox oils that might be as good as the Volvo oil, but I would not use gearbox oil from any of the other companies, as it needs to be a type specific oil.
LM oil finder:
http://www.liqui-moly.us/liquimoly/w...oil_guide.html
Castrol:
http://www.castrol.com/castrol/secti...tentId=7073092

The bad news is they all cost nearly the same as the real Volvo oil.

So your the one that put`s people off local Volvo Dealers?

Rufe is a Main Volvo Dealer as are Caffyns on eBay and they do there parts cheaper to compete.

My local Volvo Dealer i use all the time for genuine parts and i get at least 10% off all parts and the plus is i have no postage costs and if the wrong part ever supplied they will deliver to me at no extra cost by there parts van.

That is what i call service and that is why i use them.

So to say "only walk into a Dealer as a last resort" is not good advice especially when you could be missing out!

But that's because you have established a rapport with your main dealer and this takes time and a few orders.

My request for 'what is your best price' on parts over the phone was met with - 'that is what they cost' and I paid full whack. Whereas after a face to face exchange I would feel more confident to return and try better haggling. Some dealers are better than others at this (from my experience of Peugeot 205 gtis).

So talk to your local dealer first and see what can be done, if they turn out to be unmoveable, then shop about!
