They're not the same on the V60.

The V70 was like the video - hidden gas struts and a separate motor / gear unit.

The V60 has combined gas struts / motors, the hinges at the top are just that, hinges.

You can see the power cable going into the strut on both sides.

Hi all

I have a 68 plate V60 and have the same issue with the sinking tailgate. The part number I have is 31463261 off the struts and they have the cable off the top. I can’t seem to find these anywhere including AUTODOC and eBay.

Can anyone recommend some where or tell me if they know if they’re equivalent to another model?

Cheers

My 19 plate V60 has the same issue. It looks like the oil has leaked from the driver's side strut. I'll pop it into Volvo and see what they say, and I'll be sure to ask what Volvo's good will £ input will be. Volvo part number seems to be 32296298 or 31690924 and they're online used at £200 each. Ouch.

I wonder if there's an o-ring and oil that can be replaced?

Hi JollyGeo,

Did you get a response from Volvo? Just wondered as I'm in the same situation as you?
Thanks

Default Tailgate strut sinking

Hi guys,

Did anyone find a resolution as the exact same thing has happened to my 2019 V60?

I have been quoted £335 for one replacement which was a shock.

Presumably the motor has enough power to move it up to maximum, then the gas strut takes over to keep it there rather than keep the motor on which would burn it out? So it must be the gas strut part of it that’s failed. I guess this isn’t a standard off the shelf part.

The part number is the same on both struts 31463261

Hi Guys

Has anyone found a resolution for this or had any response from Volvo? I also have a 2019 V60 with the same problem. This must be a known problem with Volvo therefore they ought to be making a contribution to rectifying.

Same problem. V60 2019.
Can't believe both struts fail at same time . Any means of telling which one is faulty ?
They look quite easy to replace. Just a question of which panel to remove for the electrical connection.

I may be wrong but these parts (being electrical and are in communication with the car for operation) will likely require coding to the car to allow them to operate which will require the dealer to plug in etc so even if you could replace yourself, you will still likely require a dealer trip to get them operating correctly.

I thought my existing ones needed reprogramming as they open fully then power down to half way and hold. I can manually push lid open and it will hold usually(sometimes powers shut again).
Volvo tell me they can't reprogram them. Not convinced, especially as the reset button doesn't do anything, a £1000 to replace them seems seems like a nice little earner !

Hi folks long time since i posted, now back with a 2019 plate V60, ironically my tail gate started the annoying drop habit about 3 weeks back, thankfully I have a Volvo Selekt warranty, parts are on back order from Sweden.

In a way I am kind of glad I am not alone as this is clearly showing a known issue and hopefully Volvo will pull there finger out. Reading up I believe there was a recall on the Mk1 XC60 for this fault so fingers crossed the V60 will get the same.

With regard to the foot operated action I found it temperamental until I worked it out.

1 move close to tail gate / wave foot under rear bumper.
2 step back
3 tail gate opens.

I guess if the sensor detects you still present the tailgate doesn't open so it doesn't smack you on the chin on the way up, Irony is it's quite happy to bash me on the top of the head at the moment.
