Default All wheel drive service required

My XC90 has this message - All wheel drive service required - appears on the dash. I took it to see Steve, Cardiff Volvo Specialist. He told me it needs a new pump. He helped to remove the message from dash. As he told me it won't make much difference, more importantly it costs a few hundreds for parts only, I probably leave it as it is. Does anybody have related experience? Thanks

XC90 is AWD all time, isn't it?

Honestly, I don't feel much different.

The xc90 is mainly front wheel drive with the rears only kicking in when the front wheels slip, this is all controlled by the haldex system. It is not a permanent 4WD. You can live without it, but if you ever find yourself in a slippy situation, especially this time of year with the snow and ice, you'll wish you had the AWD system fixed and fully functional.

I thought it was all time 4 wheel drive. Thanks for the information. I am going to empty my pocket then.
