First buy a set of these as the buls are abot £6 each from a dealer and the bulbs unclip from the holders very very easy, I have had these in for months and are great.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3mm-12v-Bulbs-...QQcmdZViewItem http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?im...%3Den%26sa%3DG So dependant on you year, remove the stereo as above and the ashtray, unclip the heater facia using a screw driver it just clips out, the remove the scres from memory to by the heater panel and 3 down by the ash tray then awkwardly remove the heater control unit turn it round using a small flat head remove the bubs. Unwind the wires on the bulb holders replace with new bulbs re tie the wires re fit and job done, i did all my heater buls and 6 stereo bulbs in 20-30 minutes. |

I have a 99 V40 SE and if yours is like mine you have to first remove the stereo(not hard), then drop the white panel the heater switches are attached to forward so you can get to the back of the panel to change the bulbs. Just be careful if you climate control cos the diode is attached to this panel and is quite delicate. It's a bit fiddly but when you've done it once it's quite easy. Hope this helps |

At least that's the theory - I've tried many times to pull my control panel off and it won't budge. Maybe I'm just a wimp and not pulling hard enough but I don't want to risk breaking it. |

TonyM is right. Pull the heater switches off, this will allow enough room to get your fingers behind the panel and them pull that off. Mine was very tight and when it released I nearly summersaulted over the seats into the rear. It hurts your fingers as well! The Volvo recommended way of replacing the lights is to replace the panel. About £16 four years ago.

I have just replaced the bulbs behind the heater knobs and also the main beam switch, £8.50 in total for 3 bulbs. I used a metal ruler down the sides of the heater unit and it came away easy, same with the light unit after removing the two screws. Hope this helps.
