Post S40 cambelt

Hi, Could any one advise on how involved it is to do a cambelt change on S40 1.8i petrol 1998. I might have a go depending on how much is need to do(special tools etc), just as long as I dont need to strip down half the engine to replace it. Thanks in advance

Price wise for a dealer I'd say thats probably quite accurate but then if you dont want to pay that price, go see if you can find a local independant volvo garage who wont charge you as much. I'm sure some of the other members in your area will be able to identify some for you.

Ouch!

Or even ask your local friendly garage and ask if you could supply the parts. Therefore you could buy genuine bits, via GSF or Partsforvolvos and just get a labour rate.

May save you some loot, plus you get 'proper' parts on the car too

Thanks very much, I think I might end up doing that. I would have a go, but as I never done one before, I cant afford to mess it up.Thanks

If its the 1.8i ie Gdi engine its a pig to do, The mechanics hate it, the engine has to be lowered hence the high price, last cam belt service was about £580 in 2003 4.7 Hours labour on the bill My next one due in June next year.

Loooking at the Haynes it looks like a pig of a job-you'll need engine hoists etc.and a nice warm workshop with someone making lots of cups of tea and hands made of rubber.
The Pilot garage in Dundee quotes around £250 for this task-the dealer about £600.

They fleeced you , the official volvo time is 0.9 hours !
but did they change the crankshaft pulley nut and 4 bolts? Probably not and Volvo say they must be changed as they are stretch bolts .
