When i started driving 15 years (17 years to be legal) later than you, the first car i drove had PAS so i have literally grown up with it. Very few cars i've bought through choice haven't had it and in fact, on one or two i even retrofitted it.

I suspect that may be the prime mover in the out-moding of the push-pull/feed the wheel technique as it's no longer necesary just to get the steering wheel to turn.

The motor trade generally use palming a lot because of the fact it's quicker and it's usually just low speed stuff but if you consider a PCV or HGV, palming is virtually a necessity to turn a corner, especially if corrections are needed when driving an artic.

The gardening analogy is definitely a good one!
