indeed , this is indicated with a dull yellow/brown coolant , however most cars will have had this drained off by now and changed except for the neglected ones of course ..

Is checking it part of the volvo service clan? I ask as my car was near 4 years old when I baught it from a Volvo dealership under the select scheam. Still found it to be dirty brown at just over 4 years old and it was allegedly serviced before I picked it up. I know it's freezing point is checked but obviously mine had dead corrosion inhibitors that were not picked up.

A reason while I have an annual service at the dealer, I do a lot of work and checking myself.

Paul.

Hi Paul , yes the freezing point is checked with a refractometer which also checks battery SG ... , they should have mentioned the colour though indicating corrosion inhibitors , It is only something which needs changing once though and it will be ok for many years ... it's in their interest too of course . Again it's all down to the one person who did your job .

Thanks clan.

Will be sticking to my 8 yearly coolant change regime though. My peace of mind is worth more than the cost.

Now I wonder if volvo coolant could be used in my caravan central heating system as that needs changing every 5 years at a cost of £300. It's under manufacturers warrantee so unfortunatly have to employ a registered workshop to do the job. Of course the manufacturer filled it with the cheaper 2 year coolant , Trauma void the warrantee on the boiler if the 5 year stuff is not used so at 18 months old I foot the bill to retain the boiler warrantee.

3 more years and the warrantee is compleated, everlasting volvo fluid would save a fortune.

Paul.

I wouldn't hesitate as long as the coolant operating temperature is somewhat similar to a car , ie up to around 120C ..

The coolant in my 1988 343 is original and still bright green which is the colour it was back then and -37C .

If you want to replace it it's cheap enough to buy from Volvo. They do ready mixed if you prefer.
