Hi vollic, anymore progress with your fault? I think you should try and find an air con specialist and see if they can find any explanation for your problem. It does sound like the aircon is having a problem, even without thinking about the revs problem.

Good luck,
Pete

Dragging out an old thread here... Anyone know of a cure to this? With the air conditioning switched on, the engine revs itself to 3000 RPM once every 15-20 seconds roughly.

Butterfly valve, idle control valve both cleaned out regularly and done only about a week ago or so.

Are there any other components that could do with being cleaned?

Default air con - engine surge

I am now having this issue too.

Did you see the old post by mickey74 - seemed to think the ecu was stuck and could be reset by turing air flow up to max and turning engine on and off whilst turning air con on full or off.

Did you find another solution?

Just a crazy thought,Is there a way that the fan when turning on could boost up the air intake. I know it is crazy but you never know.

I can see this post was 1st started about 13 years old but it's still relevant to our cars today ... and yes, my car does this too.

Not sure exactly what causes it but as am having issues with the IAC and / or MAF then perhaps that's partly related to it.

I don't think it's related to anything else, hose, a/c system, water, battery, ign, etc, since the car runs well, except for the IAC / MAF issues.

It's been mentioned in other posts on here also.

Default AC - engine saurge S40 1.8 auto petrol

Yeah sorry to drag it back up but there was no clear resolution.

AC on then engine surge noticeable when driving slowly - actually effects speed and auto gear selection!

Turn AC off and problem gone.

How can ac clutch engagement effect throttle/rpm I don't understand.
It takes some current and as only a 1.8 I would almost expect the opposite.

Is the ecu trying to over compensate for this?

Take a look at https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=298577 for my take on this.

It's been a week now since I cleaned the throttle and the problem hasn't returned.

Default AC rev problem solved - thanks Drone

Well I could not logically connect why the ac kicking in and causing an engine rev to be solved by cleaning the throttle. But I thought if it worked for Drone then worth a try. I only undid one jubilee clip and removed the hose from the throttle body. Few squirts of cleaning spray and a bit of gentle rubbing on what I could reach of the inside and the outer flap. Not sure what you lubed with silicon but I did not. Stuck back on and went for burn. Initially my aircon seemed to have stopped altogether - engine on and off - all good again with aircon...and no engine surges at low revs.
Its only done 28K and is an X reg 2000plate, but there was enough soot to leave a rag pretty dirty and in addition Im sure its responding quicker on acceleration.
So a big thanks to Drone and a problem solved - although Im still a bit bothered about the logic of it
