It's also worth noting that Volvo seats tend to last a long time as well.

A few years ago, I was looking to buy a Skoda Octavia Mk2. These cars go on to do starship mileages, which is why taxi firms use them a lot, but the driver's seat doesn't last as well as the rest of the car, and most of the higher mileage examples that I saw had a partially collapsed driver's seat. You won't find that with a Volvo.

My local Volvo specialist actually has a collection of high mileage Volvos (sometimes 200K+ miles) which he uses as courtesy cars, and the one thing that they all appear to have is a good driver's seat, irrespective of mileage.

Some of these cars show signs of neglect to the interior and body by previous owners, which is why they're better suited to courtesy car duty than to resale, but they all drive well and the specilalist knows that they won't let the customer down.

I suspect that you've realised by now that we are all of one voice.

This - it's the seats that set Volvo apart from VAG. Volvo (and Jag) are just the best seats in any car. It's why a run a V40 as a work mile muncher - big car comfort seats in an economical hatch.

What? The V50 was a very well built car. Like the current (well up to last week) V40 it was much better then the Ford it was based on. It may have been slightly behind the V70 etc. of the time but it was substantially better than any Focus, Astra, 308 etc. of the same year.

You are no more likely to see a rusty one than any other Volvo, and 90% of those that do have rust are as a result of poor quality re-spray work.

FWIW, my old 2005 V70 D5 was still going strong at 497k before the current owner melted a piston with a mysterious "issue" (which is suspected by some to be of his own making...!).

My current V70 (a 2013 D4 5-cyl) is at 219k and is still running very nicely (i.e. no notable wear / age issues)...but...had an extremely expensive failure last year (which could potentially befall your D5 too). Read up on "Bosch CP4 failure", if you want to be scared, but here's the long and the short of it - it applies to almost anything modern with a Bosch fuel system (so switching brands won't help), but you can avoid it by servicing the car properly, not misfuelling, and not running it out of fuel.

Personally, I'd keep the car if it has a good history.

cheers

James

Thanks for the replies. Taking them all into consideration.

Sounds like the car is more than up to another 4 years service. Just need to decide if I want to be driving a Volvo, or this type of Volvo - dare I say on a Volvo forum!

I currently drive a 2009 Euro 5 D5 205ps auto SE V70. I have owned for over two years. Before that it was my Dad's who owned it from 6 months old. Before that it was the supplying dealer. It has a full Volvo service history. A box file full of receipts and invoices. In the time I've had it I have replaced the exhaust sensor, refurbished the wheel (back to bare metal) to fix a slow puncture. Had the radiator replaced and leaks from the windscreen washer system fixed.

Currently on 110k miles. Needs new front tyres. Possibly front pads and discs soon as well.

I took out a loan for the next four years with the aim of changing the car and paying back my Dad what is left of what I owed for putting a deposit down on a house.

First instance is to trade it in, but will struggle to get much over £3k, then get a newer car.

Now thinking, refresh it and run for another 4 years, doing 15k to 18k a year? Then look to change after that.
Do you know if some of the 'common' issues have been resolved, or have yet to emerge ? For example, leaking seal at the top of the windscreen, failed rear trail-arm bushes, swirl-flap control arm etc..

I'm not saying your car will definitely experience the above, and of course, any other model of car will probably have something that goes wrong.

Put another 100K on it anyway then have a think.

had a 57 plate v50,couple of years ago-pretty bad corrosion under the rear, front wing inner lip[like the audis ] well looked after car under 100k when we first bought it
i had to change the rear upper shock mounts[common failure-no biggie]-extreme care had to be taken to avoid shearing the bolts as the car was rusty
i will never buy another-they are pretty well known for electrical gremlins
