Default Spare wheel

Just got a v70D5 Polestar on checking in the boot to see if it was a canister of repair liquid or wheel there was no canister so my question is can a full size wheel fit in the recess or does it have to be a space saver or do I just buy another can of the repair liquid I know I should have checked under the load area but this is best of all the Volvos I have owned permanent grin

I believe a full size doesn't fit.

If you want to get the space saver spare wheel you'll also need the insert it sits in and the retaining bolt thingy, and the jack and wheel brace ideally!

Do you have the compressor? You can buy can of foam either oem spec or different ones o have a can of holts tyre inflator as well as a space saver spare and compressor.

Compressor is the key part often can get away with re inflating and driving to garage

A full size wheel will not fit - but a space saver should.

The repair kit includes a specific compressor to inject the sealant, so you would need to get on of those not just something from Halfords. eBay is your friend if you go that route....

Tyre sealant won't sort anything except a nail. Space saver wheel is only about £45 direct from Volvo. It's the insert foam bit etc that adds up, the jack is horrendously priced. Try FRF Volvo Swansea for a quote and mention this forum and they should do some discount, thay also deliver. Some local dealers also do discount if you ask so worth a try.
A full size spare won't fit either, wheel well isn't deep enough.

The small print on the can of gunk breaks the bad news that if you use the product and seal the leak, the tyre cannot be repaired and must be discarded. The system is a very expensive, "get you home" device which does not preserve your tyre. The awful skinny spare is a better option but the best option of a fifth identical full size alloy wheel as a spare will not fly as it will not fit in the wheel well which is too shallow. If you really want a true spare wheel, you have two options. Firstly you can search down the police spare wheel bracket to fasten the wheel to the side of the load space which reduces the load space, or you can replace the existing load space floor with one that allows the wheel in the wheel well to protrude through the floor. I believe that both options have been taken up by contributors on this forum. but neither of them is a perfect solution. I think it very sad that the designers didn't leave owners with the option of a wheel well that would store a full size wheel. What do brand loyal Swedish owners in the isolated north of that country do in the depth of winter if they get a flat tyre? The mind boggles!

I have a P3 v70 and it came with a skinny spare, these are not good for caravan towing which we do a lot, so far no worries. I have discovered courtesy of my local tyre people that a full size tyre could fit in the wheel well unless you have a boot floor which has the lift up floor section which houses the shopping bag carrier. These do not allow the boot floor to close fully, but removing the shopping floor might well do. Seem to be so busy being retired not found time to check it all out.

If you have no shopping bag floor have a try.

Virtuafly no car suitable for towing actually have even a skinny spare, it seems some cars do not even have a wheel well.

I tow and bought the space saver kit I also carry a trailer spare and a can of foam.......why is a full size spare need for towing?

Trying to change an off side wheel at night in the rain on a motorway or squirt and go........ also you can reuse the tyre if the foam is removed quick enough I had a leaky tyre on previous car just before it went back no tyre in stock so foam went it and off I went..... foam lasted until the tyre was replaced

I just do not understand why designers even thought of not having a full size spare wheel, let alone putting their ideas into production.
However, was recently discussing this canister device and tyre not repairable after use of same with my tame local tyre fitter whilst having some new tyres fitted. He advised that he has repaired punctures in tyres which have been “foamed”, that’s provided it would have been a repairable puncture in the first place. He simply ensures that the area within the tyre casing in the vicinity of the repair is scrupulously cleaned before making the repair. So far without any adverse feed back.

I have had a least one tyre repaired after I used an aftermarket can of sealant ("Flat Mate" I think) and the tyre fitter didn't mention it was a problem.

It's worth knowing that AA and RAC carry a universal temporary spare wheel in their vans now, so if you have a blow out which would render the sealant useless, and if you have no spare, they will loan you their temporary one until you can get to a tyre fitter., where you leave theirs for them to collect. The RAC small print does say for some unfathomable reason that you need to have the original sealant / compressor kit in the car for you to be covered for this, but in practice I'd hope the technician wouldn't leave a payed up member on the side of the road if they didn't have the kit...
