@stuart: He told me I could just ignore it and keep an eye on the oil level and as long as it never run low on oil all would have been fine. However, the thought of oil stains all over the monoblock and splattered over the underside of the car was enough to decide to have it sorted out.

@2.4TSE: Unfortunately old cars require quite a bit more maintenance than modern tat and I just have to accept it, that said modern tat won't last as long so it won't be a problem in the future. Had I decided to get a modern car I just think how boring life would have been. I don't envy youngsters nowadays, the future isn't so bright for them as it was when we were kids. Rock on back when I was 16 and bought my first car for the princely sum of £5

Collected the car today from Turbo Tech Glasgow. They refurbished the turbo, changed the oil with the correct Castrol 0W-30 A5/B5 and refilled the coolant with genuine Volvo concentrate. Only driven 3 or 4 miles home in heavy traffic so not tried the boost yet

EDIT: Also had them carry out a smoke test which the car passed.

Few pics the mechanic who was doing the work sent me

The cable tie clips to hold my harness to the fan cowl were all either missing or burst so I ordered some non Volvo ones from eBay and fitted them today, another job ticked off the list

I had a bit of an epiphany this afternoon after I fitted the cable tie clips!!!
Although not impossible to release the cable ties, the location of them makes it extremely difficult to get to the tab with a tiny screwdriver to release the tooth that allows it to open, therefore cutting it is the quickest/easiest way when required.

When I built my garage back in 2008 I used cable tie clips for the lighting cables, drill a hole in the joist, hammer the clip in, put on a cable tie in and the job's a good-un.

I decided to take a look at the huge bag of clips I had today and although I've not tried on the car yet I'm sure it will go straight into the fan cowling allowing me to use a standard cable tie that can easily be disposed of and a fresh one fitted as required. Will update once I have tried it out

I removed the undertray of the V70 tonight to check if the leaking turbo was sorted and happy to say it's all nice and dry

Last night when reviewing the above picture of the charge pipe connecting hose it didn't look correct. I decided to have a closer look at it this morning

This was the hose when I fitted a few months ago after I re-inserted the metal sleeve with the aid of a heat gun and large socket

When I removed the hose today it was obvious the charge pipe has went a bit skew-whiff as it wasn't lining up with the turbo. Hot air gun again being careful not to get it too hot and I moved it back to its correct position. I'm unsure if the charge pipe will have any 'memory' during heating/cooling cycles so will keep an eye on it over the next few weeks to ensure it doesn't go out of line again.

Back together and much looking better

With SWMBO out at a Christmas party today, the weather and the telly being utter crap I decided it was time to return to the ‘fir tree clips’ for the wiring harnesses that goes over the cooling fan cowl. I should really have waited until I needed to take the fan off next time, however I just thought that the next time I have to remove the fan it would probably be when I was in a hurry and wouldn’t have time to make a tidy job of my replacement clips.

As suspected it wasn’t as straight forward as first anticipated. I had to remove the ‘fins’ from the clips as they weren’t flexible enough to go through the hole. I needed to find washers with a 6mm hole that were not going to rust away so decided to rob my piggy bank of 5p pieces and drill a hole in them. I had thought about melting the clip pin at the rear to hold it in place but decided that might not be the best approach so instead I used starlock washers.

Next time I need to remove the fan I only need to cut the cable ties, no more searching for fir tree clips the correct size

Clips cut, fins removed, rustproof washers made from 5p coins and starlock washers

Time to change over the plush carpet mats for my winter rubber mats/trays. Unfortunately these rubber mats/trays are no longer available but I managed to find these well used ones which required a lot of work to get them into the shape they are now

A most uneventful Christmas trip in the V70 this year, yes the wind was blowing a hooley as we drove north of Spean Bridge but without incident and the car took it all in its stride on 23rd. Then to the 24th I went for a drive to Glen Nevis and Glenfinnan to get me out the house for a break... Home today where the mileometer clicked over 66,666 miles when driving down the Loch side just after the Pulpit on the A82.

Glen Nevis

-5°C this morning and with the heavy rain the door handles had frozen over night, the door seals however were fine as I had coated them with Gummi Pflege a few weeks ago. Once the car was opened I checked the oil and water level and stuck my hand under the turbo to check there was no more leaks after its rebuild

Der Teufel steckt im Detail

Well I've just caught up on this entire thread. What a great read and I'm very jealous of the garage.

I've got a few accumulated questions.....

How do you find lanoguard? I've seen plenty of advertising for it but not many real reviews.

How do you know if the thermistor is blown? I have a Halfords battery so need to ask!

I've only got a single key for my S60. Any recommendations for finding a decent key man?

Lastly, which diagnostic tool do you use (ignoring VIDA)?

Looking forward to the next update!
