No its a bit hit and miss. If you find the ECU though and its a Seimens EMS2000 then it should be compliant.

I quite agree with the above and will be getting a custom MTE map when I have bought/installed some goodies, FMIC (sat waiting in living room), rebuild turbo plus CR Turbos 16G conversion, 440 or 550cc injectors, downpipe+sports cat+cat back and water injection (time and money )
but bang for buck the Upsolute chip has been great for me while the car is in standard trim.
Simon Coe is a good bloke and very helpful plus its a standard map so he comes to your door and does it all in about an hour or so. I paid £295 a year or so ago so might be a touch more now but with 165k on the clock she still flies .

I have got a budget reader which you can try, if you look in the drivers footwell on the right hand side of the centre console there should be a large red OBD II connector (you can't miss it if it's there. The ECU is actually behind there set behind the radio and has to be drilled out to get at it.

Volvo plugs are gapped at 0.6 out of the box so I guess they'd know and been told that before.

Soldered chip will be a bit of a nightmare to reverse though mate. In fact you may need to have it removed prior to the wizards arrival (like my RICA I have).
I did toy with the idea of sending it to Marco to be desoldered etc first then have him map it again when he comes over

Sort that when I come to it if needs be which could be a while lol.
Not sure why I would have to remove it though since it is the original ECU which in its normal state is soldered on anyway which is removed and flashed for the re-chip. Thought the MTE kit was plug and play anyway so no need to remove ECU.

There is indeed a connector of some sort where you say. Are you passing near Cardiff any time soon?

Volvo plugs are gapped at 0.6 out of the box so I guess they'd know and been told that before.

I checked the NGK's and they were at 0.6 themselves.

I can't see the plugs causing the problem of the lambda light coming on as I swapped new for old so if anything things should have improved.

I guess I need to sort out a reader really to see what's going on.

The above looks like an OBD2 connector, can I just buy any generic OBD2 code reader?

Looks like it and I did. Got a budget cheap one off Ebay for about ten quid and it reads the engine codes plus clears them which is all I wanted. Might be tempted to get the better one listed above though! Although code reading needs knowledge behind it. Not passing Cardiff anytime soon though, sorry. Your welcome over if you can get here although I work 12pm to around midnight 5 or 6 days a week trunking milk for Wisemans at the mo so have to fit in around that.

Mines like this one listed and as you can see isn't as comprehesive as the other one not supporting CANBUS etc. but does my 2001 Phase2 T4.
Have ordered this one myself to upgrade since I can wait for delivery from China.

I kept getting an intermittent code for 'AFM low signal' which suggests a duff AFM but always consult local Volvo dealer (MRG Chippenham are great) as it turned out to be the return valve from the carbon filter vent from the fuel tank (common problem apparently so the very helpful technician told me). It sticks opens and rather than returning intermittent 'tank vent' it constantly lets unmetered return(it returns inline just after the AFM) so the AFM and Lamda disagree hence the code. Had I replaced the more expensive AFM instead of the £22 valve due to the code it would not have sorted the problem hence me saying you need knowledge behinds the codes.

Soem of the cheapest readers don't come with code lists but you can easily google them online. That where I got mine but bear in mine it is literally pages and pages to print.

That is an OBD2 port but all S40s had one even if they werent compliant. OBD2 is a generic protocol so any OBD2 reader will read them. They are only engine codes though as the S40 OBD2 doesnt support other funtions like A/C etc.

I have just connected it to my mate's Syke-pickavant reader but nothing.

Tried it with and without ignition on. there are wires going into the back of the obd2 connector.

any suggestions?

If his reader is an OBD2 one which i guess it is it means your car is one of the early ones that isnt compliant(all cars had the obd2 port and wires into them). The only other software I know of that will work on your car apart from dealer stuff is here http://www.ilexa.co.uk/content/view/38/19/ but it isnt cheap at £115 just for the software.

You read OBD2 codes with the ignition and with engine running or not. Might well be worth a trip to a local Volvo indy now to get the codes read.
