Think I might be getting somewhere now. Replaced two of the switches on the front but no change so I thought I'd take the light out from the roof.
In the pictures you can see that there is a green wire and a black wire that were connected and a blue and black wire that wasn't attached to anything and the connector taped up ie not being used. With the black and green wire connected I had all the previous problems. I thought I'd disconnect the black wire and connect the black and blue wire. Hey presto my interior light works and only comes on when the doors are open and go off when they are closed. All except for the rear drivers side door, this has no effect and I know on that door a black wire runs to the switch. So better than where I was but still not quite right. Anyone have any ideas? I'm confused. Thanks again Joe |

Oh de-ar ! I've only ever seen two wires to the light. Look at wiring diagram in Haynes, relating to your year. Carry on, men.

Hello all. Thanks for all your help. Everything is working now. For some reason the black wire connected to the light switch made the lights stay on all the time but swapping that with the black and blue wire made everything work as it should. Very simple and cheap but took a while to discover. No idea why this is the case but it's working.
Thanks for all your help. Joe |

Good that it is working.
Perhaps at some time for some reason the light was removed and during re-installation those wires were re-connected incorrectly? . |

I know the headlining was replaced so maybe it happened then.
Glad that little but annoying issue is sorted |
