Battery problem?? (v70 t5 98)
Hi Guys
my trusty v70 has been sitting in the drive for about a month now while i decide to keep it or sell the car my mother gave me. went to take it for a run last night and battery was flat (no electrics at all)... so stuck some jump leads on it... after about 3 mins of charging there was enough juice to fire her up - before the 3 mins when i tried to start it would just click! took the car for a 10 min drive up the dual carriageway - stopped for petrol.... then wouldnt start again.. all electrics worked just would click when i went to start... got the jump leads on again... fired up within 30 seconds of the jump leads being on! drove home... turned off ignition... tried to start - just clicked... but all electrics still working! im going to take the battery out tonight and get it fully charged... then see how it is after that! anything else it could be other than the battery? maybe the battery just isnt holding enough charge? and if i need a new battery - any recomendations? best prices please lol cheers guys! |

How old is the battery? Just because you can jump it, it may well be beyond recovery as it is too old and been left to long.

not sure how old the battery is - but was working fine in the car a month ago as the car was being used by me every day - started every time without fail!

There's no need to remove the battery from the car to charge it, at least with a moderate to low current charger. Do you not have a location where you can keep it on the charger overnight? Just use the same '+' connection in the engine compartment (behind the fuse box) that you used to jump start the car.
It's possible that with a full charge you could get more use out of the existing battery, but probably the battery is finished and should be replaced. It's widely reported that many modern cars will run down a battery in a month sitting unstarted. |

i always thought that once the engine was running... a five to ten minute drive would be enough to re-charge the battery again? is this not the case?

No, it'll take longer than that. Plus if the battery has been completely flattened and left flat for a while, it'll be permanently damaged. Best bet is to hook the car up to a battery conditioner/charger like Optimate and see if that sorts it out. No need to remove the battery. If not, you'll be looking at a new battery I'm afraid.

cheers for that - makes a little more sense now...
unfortunately theres no where to leave the car attached to something for any length of time securely so ill need to whip the battery out.... |
