Nightmare . You have only just bought this one, right? A cheap XC90 is very rarely a bargain. Invariably it hasn't been well looked after and will turn into a money pit. Hell, mine had been very well looked after, wasn't cheap and still turned into a money pit!

Is it bent valves? How much do you want for it as a non runner?

I would be really careful with such line. I know you trust mechanics, but I don't and for a good reason. It is really easy for them to lie and buy the car for peanuts when in fact it can be easily fixed. How come the garage first said the car runs and now it doesn't ? At the very least, do not sell it to that garage, bring it home and sell it yourself. As for the water pump, most certainly it was an aftermarket part.

Apologies for the late reply, I've been very busy with work.
I've been told there is a hole in the engine. So it's completely buggered. I trust the mechanic although not a volvo specialist it is run by my partners uncle. So the the hunt for a new one continues. Thank you for your help and advice. |

I don't do a lot of miles but I was under the impression that diesels where the better engine. So a diesel. Thank you for the link.

So are you just writing off the cost of that car, having owned it for five minutes?

Hi there, I have seen this myself first hand before. Had a late XC60 D5 in with failed aux belt that got wrapped around the crank and caused the cam belt to slip.
I took the belts off and just to see I timed it all back up and fitted a new belt. Turned it over by hand and it had compression and no tight spots so tried to start it up. Started up just fine and I even drove it round the car park but it would not rev up and it did sound a bit tappety. Stripped it all down and every hydraulic tappet in the head had broken out of its casing, amazing the car actually ran. This is quite a common failure I have done three of these now last one on Friday 2009 XC90, I use a firm in Poland who can repair the heads, don't know how they do it but its very clever heads come back like new. Total bill usually comes to about £2000 ish (£950 for the head) as long as the cam shafts are OK sometimes the sprocket rotates on the exhaust cam which is bad news. Very surprised there is a hole in the engine, in fact I don't believe that, especially if they had it running, in my experience the hydraulic tappets just break out of the casting and then the pistons have enough clearance to miss the valves. The valves them selves are usually fine as they are in line with the pistons and never seen any piston damage at all. regards Ben Last edited by MissSpentYouth; Oct 14th, 2017 at 22:20. |
