Very gloomy out there and I know that as soon as I get the ramps and tools out, then take off the undertray, it will start to rain. So task postponed for the time being awaiting better weather.

A welcome few hours of sunshine allowed me to get under my XC70 and have a look at the bevel gear box. The good news is that on my 2011, the drain/fill plug is the same as circled in blue in an earlier post.
The less good news is that on my vehicle access to the plug is made impossible by the presence of a guard which covers the inboard end of the R/H drive shaft: I removed the two securing bolts that are visible from the underside, but once I'd done that it was obvious that there's another fastening that isn't accessible from underneath. My next line of attack will be to remove the R/H inner wheel arch to see if I can gain access that way. I'm in no real hurry as the VIDA service plan shows only topping up the oil if there's a leak. Nothing about replacing it that I can see. If the XC90s don't have the same guard as the XC70, access to the fill plug shouldn't be too bad.

Glad to hear you had some luck and thanks for the update.
I wouldn't rely too much on what VIDA says re service intervals as they say not to change the gearbox oil in my v70 and you most certainly should! Any oil in a car should be changed at some point as it does wear out. They tend to say you don't need to service these parts as this way they can say their servicing costs are lower to new buyers. Also these parts will likely last longer than the cars warranty which is all that Volvo really care about. But as people who buy cars out of warranty we do car about the longevity of these parts.
