Question XC70 Tow bar and reinforcemnt bar

I recently had a new Witter towbar fitted to my 2016 Volvo XC70 D5 AWD by a local towbar specialist.

I had my car into the Volvo dealer yesterday for something un related but the dealer mentioned that a reinforcement bar had been removed when the towbar was fitted which should have been refitted at the end of the job. I contacted the towbar fitter who said that the reniforcement bar should not be re fitted. Who is right ?

As far as I know the reinforcement bar isn’t re-fitted when the tow bar is fitted.

Yes it is refitted, with the volvo towbar it is anyway

It is usual with VAG stuff to bin the crash bar when a towbar is fitted but not with volvo's as it is designed to fit behind it

The dealer is right the tow bar people have compromised your safety by removing the extremely strong boron steel beam , they have not designed the towbar properly to fit behind it , which is where the volvo tow bar goes , Remember volvo tow bars are crash tested , the non volvo ones are not as far as i know , why not ask them ...

THis does not apply to the new XC90 , with that you do discard the beam , but it is an alloy one not a boron steel one ...

I think 82/83 show it being replaced.

Got the fitting instructions from the manufacturer, Witter, who clearly say refit the crash beam. The fitter had kept the crash beam and the car is going back later this week to have it refitted.

Methinks a sloppy job in the first place of which I would not have been aware if the car had not needed a new bumper.

Thanks to everyone for their help and to the local main dealer for pointing out the problem, it may literally have been a life saver.

Always refreshing when you have to almost do the job on the behalf of the guy you paid to do it in the first place!

What is the XC70 like for towing?
I'm looking at getting an older 2006 auto awd model and one reason is specifically to tow with.

220 bhp vs 1300kg, awesome power, great towcar but my caravan is hardly a test

It's the torque that counts, my 3.85 tonne motorhome only has 130bhp, but enough torque to pull it up alpine passes without slowing.
